The Samsung Galaxy S6: Metal Meets Glass

After the uninspiring sales of the Galaxy S5 (which was lower than what Samsung had hoped for), the Galaxy S6 has been seen as the company's saving grace. At last, the 2015 Samsung flagship smartphone has arrived and it looks radically different from its waterproof, plastic-made predecessor. Meet the Samsung Galaxy S6. This latest flagship from Samsung ditched plastic materials in favor of metal and glass construction. It comes in four distinctive hues: White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum, and Blue Topaz. The Galaxy S6 is also thinner than its predecessor at just 6.8 mm and lighter too at 138 grams. But there are also features of the Galaxy S5 that are nowhere to be found on its successor. These include IP67 certification for water and dust resistance, a microSD card slot, and a removable battery cover, which may or may not be a deal breaker for Galaxy smartphone lovers. With all these cons mentioned, will the Galaxy S6 still turn out to be a great smartphone? Let's find out.

Like its predecessor, the Galaxy S6 packs a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display of a whopping Quad HD (1,440 x 2,560) resolution. This translates to a pixel density of 577 ppi, making it the most pixel dense smartphone to date. Its brightness level is pegged at 600 nits which is ideal for outdoor viewing and with an infinite contrast ratio, content can be viewed under direct sunlight. The Galaxy S6 also ships with Android 5.0 Lollipop on board with the latest iteration of the TouchWiz UI. The latter has been streamlined and simplified but has included support for interchangeable themes. Still part of the TouchWiz UI are the Ultra Power Saving Mode, S Finder, and Private Mode. The Home button is larger than in the Galaxy S5 because the fingerprint scanner now supports touch-to-unlock as opposed to swipe-to-unlock. There is also a heart rate sensor near the protruding back camera.

Ticking inside Samsung's new flagship device is an advanced, home-brewed Exynos silicon of 64-bit architecture. It has an octa-core CPU consisting of a 2.1 GHz quad-core cluster paired with another 1.5 GHz quad-core cluster. This particular SoC was built on 14-nanometer architecture with power efficiency that is second to none. The Galaxy S6 packs 3GB LPDDR4 RAM and comes with at least 32GB of internal memory. Sadly, there is no microSD card slot in tow. If you plan to store a lot of media files, then only the 64GB and 128GB models are the way to go. To make up for the lack of microSD card support, the UFS 2.0 flash storage of the Galaxy S6 promises quicker access speeds while consuming less power than previous technologies.

During their reign, the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 had the one of the most capable cameras in the market. The main camera on the Galaxy S6 will not disappoint either (at least on paper). With its f/1.9 aperture, Smart OIS, and automatic real-time HDR, its camera is expected to be among the best in its class. In addition, Samsung has added a white balance detection system that uses infra-red light detection to set the white balance accordingly, even in tricky light situations. As for its front-facing camera, there is a 5-MP snapper with a wide f/1.9 aperture perfect for selfies.

To make the Galaxy S6 more svelte than its predecessor, the battery that comes with it was slashed to just 2,550 mAh, which is rather small for an Android flagship. But it's not just about battery capacity these days as the Galaxy S6 relies on power efficiency to last you through the day. The Galaxy S6 also has built-in support for wireless charging. Even its wired charger can provide 150% faster charging compared to the Galaxy S5. There's no official information yet on its pricing but it is expected that the base 32GB model will cost $200 with a 2-year contract or $650 contract-free. The Samsung Galaxy S6 will launch globally on April 10. Are you getting one?
