Samsung Launches the Premium-Looking Galaxy Alpha

Samsung finally took the wraps off the often rumored and leaked Galaxy Alpha. It sports a metallic frame and a faux leather, plastic back cover, making it look more premium than other Galaxy smartphones.  Measuring 132.4mm x 65.5mm x 6.7mm, it is the sveltest Galaxy smartphone to date and comparable to the size of the Galaxy S5 mini. It is light too at just 115 grams.

The Galaxy Alpha packs a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 720p HD resolution, which also happens to be the rumored display size of the upcoming iPhone 6. Instead of using a Snapdragon 800 or 801 chipset, the Galaxy Alpha comes with an Exynos 5 Octa silicon, which makes it the first device to sport one. There is 2GB RAM on board and 32GB of non-expandable storage. It will run Android 4.4.4 KitKat with TouchWiz on top, and includes Galaxy S5 features such as the S Health and Ultra Power Saving Mode. Similar to the Galaxy S5 flagship, it will have a fingerprint scanner and a heart rate sensor. It will also be compatible with the Samsung Gear smartwatches. Do note that it is not in any way a Galaxy S5 replacement or successor. The Galaxy Alpha is what the Galaxy S5 mini should have been in the first place.

Imaging-wise, the Galaxy Alpha is equipped with a very capable 12-MP primary shooter accompanied by a 2.1-MP front camera. It shoots video in FullHD and 4K UHD. It also boasts LTE Cat. 6 connectivity, dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, and Bluetooth 4.0. Its battery capacity, however, is rather measly at 1,860mAh but it is user replaceable. It will be available in Charcoal Black, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold, Sleek Silver, and Scuba Blue color variants. It will be launched in September 12, 2014.

So, what do you think about the Samsung Galaxy Alpha? Do you think it is an iPhone 6 killer? Or will it just compete with the Android minis and compacts?
